The Fate of Papuan Women Amid Massive Deforestation

Jayapura, Olemah.comThe increasing scale of deforestation in Papua has had serious consequences for the lives of Papuan women. Not only are they losing access to natural resources that support their economy, but they are also facing tougher competition from migrants in selling traditional products such as betel nuts.

In addition to these economic challenges, Papuan women continue to struggle against a deeply rooted patriarchal system that restricts their rights in various aspects of life. Many of them experience intimidation and violence, both within their families and in society. Some even feel as if they are living in a prison in their own homeland, with shrinking space to express themselves and fight for their rights.

Given this situation, civil society movements play a crucial role in challenging the systems that oppress Papuan women. There is an urgent need for unity in the fight for justice and equal rights, particularly in response to policies that fail to protect their interests.

One of the key solutions is to continue raising their voices, advocating for justice, and demanding the rights that have long been neglected. Papuan women must strengthen solidarity and resistance against policies that disadvantage them, including the negative impacts of resource exploitation carried out without considering the welfare of Indigenous communities.

To uphold the rights of Papuan women, cooperation among various stakeholders is essential, including civil society movements, women's organizations, and the government. These collective efforts are expected to empower Papuan women in society and ensure their rights are protected amid rapid social and environmental changes.

Papuan women play a crucial role in preserving culture, protecting the environment, and sustaining life in Papua. Therefore, the struggle for justice and equality must continue so that they can live with dignity and prosperity.
