Returning Home After 50 Years, Erick Maxsi Remembers His Parents’ Struggles in Silimo

Yahukimo, Olemah.com Erick Maxsi, the youngest son of Bus Maxsi and Sarli Maxsi, returned to his hometown of Silimo after 50 years. During the visit, he reflected on his life journey and witnessed the fruits of his parents’ hard work in translating the Bible into the Ngalik language.

Erick Maxsi vividly remembers when his family moved to Silimo when he was just one year old. He also recalled his elementary school days at Pos Tuju, where he spent every holiday in Silimo. “I remember very well my childhood and how my life journey unfolded in this place,” he said.

He emphasized that 1982 was the last year he spent in Papua before finally returning home to see the results of his parents’ five decades of dedication. For him, it was an overwhelming joy.

One of the greatest legacies left by his family is the translation of the Bible into the Ngalik language, a project that was later continued by his older sibling. Erick Maxsi urged the Ngalik community to cherish this gift. “Don’t just keep it on a bookshelf, but use the Bible in your daily life,” he advised.

He also expressed his gratitude to all parties involved in completing the Bible translation. “I am grateful that so many have contributed, from Canada, the United States, the government, and the people of Silimo. Thanks to this collaboration, the Bible translation was finally completed,” he concluded.

Returning home after five decades was an emotional moment for Erick Maxsi. He hopes that what his parents started will continue to be used and bring blessings to the Ngalik community in Silimo.
