Yahukimo,Olemah.com – A recent shooting incident in Yahukimo Regency has sparked widespread protests from local residents. The Front Justice for Tobias Silak, a group formed to advocate for justice for victims of shootings, issued a strong statement on September 25, 2024, regarding a shooting that took place on August 20, 2024. In the incident, two civilians were shot, including Tobias Silak (22), a staff member of the Yahukimo General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), who died on the scene. The other victim, Naro Dapla, sustained gunshot wounds to the thigh and arm.
According to the statement released by Front Justice for Tobias Silak, the shooting was carried out by a member of the Satgas Damai Cartenz, stationed at the Brimob Sekla post. The group claims that this brutal act is the culmination of a series of violent incidents involving military personnel in Yahukimo since 2021.
The group also reported that over the past four years, the number of shootings against civilians in Papua, particularly in Yahukimo, has been steadily increasing. However, those involved in these incidents are rarely prosecuted, and some are even promoted within military ranks.
Front Justice for Tobias Silak noted that among five shooting cases involving members of the Yahukimo Police and Military Command 1715, none of the perpetrators have been brought to justice. They are demanding the immediate arrest, dismissal, and fair prosecution of those responsible for the shooting of Tobias Silak.
Additionally, the group called for the removal of the Yahukimo Police Chief, citing his failure to maintain security in the region. They are also urging the withdrawal of Brimob posts and the complete removal of both organic and non-organic military personnel from the area.
The Yahukimo community, representing 12 tribes, supports these demands and rejects the practice of violence, which they describe as "paying for human lives." They are calling for a transparent and fair legal process for the victims' families.
Meli Kobak, the Chairman of the Hubla Tribal Association, emphasized that this fight is not a political issue but a humanitarian one. "Egianus Kogoya was able to release the Susi Air pilot hostage. How can Indonesia not resolve a problem it has created through its own law enforcement officers?" Kobak said, criticizing the government's and military's handling of the situation.
Front Justice for Tobias Silak hopes that their demands will be understood and addressed by law enforcement to bring justice for the victims of violence in Yahukimo.
The recurring violence in Papua raises serious questions about the government's commitment to upholding law enforcement and protecting human rights in the region. [Kaki Abu]
