Dekai, Olemah.com - The Yahukimo Indigenous Community (OAY) staged a protest march to the Yahukimo Police Station on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, demanding accountability for a shooting incident that left two residents wounded, one of whom later died. The incident occurred on Jalan Gunung, where the two residents were hit by bullets allegedly fired mistakenly by members of the police.
During the protest, large families from the Hubla and Kimyal tribes joined the march from Jalan Gunung to the police station in Dekai. They sought an explanation from the police regarding the shooting incident that claimed the life of Thobias Silak, a recent graduate who had just started working as an operator at the Election Supervisory Board (BAWASLU) of Yahukimo Regency.
"We want to know what led to this incident involving our brother, Thobias Silak. He had just returned to Yahukimo after completing his studies and started working at BAWASLU. We demand a clear explanation from the Yahukimo Police," said a family member of the victim.
According to the protesting residents, violence involving firearms must be immediately stopped. "Does every problem in Papua need to be resolved with guns? We live in our own land but feel like we are in a foreign country. Please, stop this violence," said one of the residents participating in the protest.
The family stated that they have yet to receive an adequate explanation from the police. "We will take Thobias's body home first, and after the burial, we will address this matter," said a family representative present at the Yahukimo Police Station earlier this morning.
Further developments regarding the resolution of this issue will be communicated after the burial and in the discussions to be held in the coming days.
